Here’s a step-by-step guide to installing Metabase on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS:

Step 1: Update the System

Start by ensuring that your system packages are up-to-date.

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

Step 2: Install Java

Metabase requires Java to run, specifically OpenJDK 11 or newer. Install it with:

sudo apt install openjdk-11-jdk -y

Verify the installation:

java -version

Step 3: Create a Metabase Directory

Set up a dedicated directory for Metabase:

sudo mkdir /opt/metabase
cd /opt/metabase

Step 4: Download Metabase

Download the latest Metabase JAR file:

wget https://downloads.metabase.com/latest/metabase.jar

Step 5: Configure Metabase as a Systemd Service

To have Metabase run as a service, create a service file:

sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/metabase.service

Add the following configuration to the file:

[Unit]
Description=Metabase server
After=syslog.target
After=network.target
[Service]
WorkingDirectory=/opt/metabase
ExecStart=/usr/bin/java -jar /opt/metabase/metabase.jar
User=root
Type=simple
Restart=always
StandardOutput=syslog
StandardError=syslog
SyslogIdentifier=metabase
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Save and close the file.

Step 6: Start and Enable the Metabase Service

Enable and start the Metabase service to launch automatically at boot:

sudo systemctl enable metabase
sudo systemctl start metabase

You can verify if the service is running with:

sudo systemctl status metabase

Step 7: Configure Firewall (if needed)

If you have a firewall enabled, allow access to Metabase's default port (3000):

sudo ufw allow 3000

Step 8: Access Metabase

Open your browser and navigate to:

http://your_server_ip:3000

With my Server IP

http://192.168.224.129:3000

You’ll be greeted by Metabase’s setup screen, where you can create an admin account and connect your databases.
